The song hit #1 in Cash Box magazine and peaked at #2 for three weeks on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart, behind "When I Think of You" by Janet Jackson and "True Colors" by Cyndi Lauper. It reached #3 on the Billboard R&B Chart. The B-Side of the single was "Don't Turn Around", covered by Bonnie Tyler, Aswad, and Ace of Base. Phil Collins plays drums on the song. "Typical Male" is unusual for a pop song, in that the chorus includes a single measure in 2/4 time.
