New Zealand's rural workers, the shearers, the scrubcutters, the haymakers, the shepherds, the fencers, the musterers and, in older times, the drovers, the swaggers, the bullockies, all have at least one thing in common - smoko, a billy of tea and a smoke, at times that more genteel folk might call morning and afternoon tea.

When smoko is near and the billy is on the boil, tired and thirsty bodies eagerly await refreshment and rest, and a brief respite from the hard slog of the day's work.
