Yusef Lateef's first two sessions as a leader (which were originally released on three LPs) are included in full on this two-LP set. Although he had played with Dizzy Gillespie's big band in the late '40s, Lateef spent a long period in the 1950s studying in Detroit. By the time he emerged with these recordings, he had a fully formed sound not only on tenor but on flute where his style was definitely touched by Eastern music. With a group of fellow Detroiters (trombonist Curtis Fuller, pianist Hugh Lawson, bassist Ernie Farrow, drummer Louis Hayes, and Doug Watkins, a fine bassist who here plays percussion) Lateef performs 13 of his originals which range from rifting stomps to modal pieces.
