Bill Direen is a highly literate and independent writer and musician whose work includes poetry, fiction, songs and music-theatre. During the 1980s, he released a string of critically acclaimed records (using band names including The Bilders, Six Impossible Things and Soluble Fish) on his own labels and through Flying Nun; and he founded alternative Christchurch theatre group Blue Ladder. Based in Europe for long periods of time, he has written poetry and prose extensively and maintained a prolific musical output (now through Auckland's Powertool Records).
