Carnivorous Plant Society

The Carnivorous Plant Society brand new sealed 2013 release.

The Carnivorous Plant Society was conceived by Auckland musician Finn Scholes somewhere along his journey through bands including Bannerman, One Million Dollars, Matecito Latin Band and the Rodger Fox Big Band, among others.

On the group’s debut, Scholes puts his network of friends to good use, collating a who’s who of local noisemakers and their instruments of choice to create an intriguing collection of soundtracks that could be loosely labeled as new wave jazz. In short, the album features the legend that is Don McGlashan on euphonium, Hollie Fullbrook (Tiny Ruins) on cello and hidden vocals, Alex Freer (Artisan Guns) with Alistair Deverick (Boycrush) on drums/percussion, plus Scholes himself leading the charge on horns, keys and vibraphone - not to mention plenty of others with an arsenal including mellophone, flugelhorn, ocarina, tuba and congas.

The result is 11-tracks of filmesque compositions that take their lead from Mexican mariachi, sounds from the deepest pockets of space and even Spaghetti Western. Song titles too follow the pattern of eccentricity, coming in the form of ‘Misty Magic Land’, ‘A.D.N.D’ - an acronym for Advanced Dungeons and Dragons, ‘Arp Of Sadness’, the prequel to ‘Arp. Of Pleasure’, and ‘Bob Dylan’. Carnivorous Plant Society was produced by Scholes and Alistair Deverick. The album is supported by a collection of quirky cartoon-style videos, hand drawn by Scholes at the kitchen table.
